Hey, I was just curious and wanted to see if it was possible, when given the option to select the video dimensions, if you could successfully convert from the 16:9 <widescreen> to a standard full screen video without the strange "stretching" effect commonly seen when this is done. I doubt if it is possible but I just thought that there might be some sort of heuristic program that would "fill in the blanks" where the stretching occurs.

Since I already have a good feel for what the answer to the previous question is going to be let me ask this one as well. Is there any way to configure SmartRipper so that it doesn?t rip the 16:9 aspect ratio but rather the 4:3?

I know that the 16:9 ratio is better for a sharper picture; it?s just that eventually I am going to convert my .VOB's into .mpeg and I just get tired of looking at that little bitty strip of movie right there in the center. I have a 19" monitor and I want to utilize every inch of it, not just a 4" strip down the middle. Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Shawn

Well the first question i dont know. But since you have ripped the vobs, and encoded them into mpeg. You can now watch them on a standalone DVD that supports VCD's. So burn them on cds using Nero, or EZ cd creator. And now you dont have to use your comp. to watch the movies.Hope this helps, but i think you already know this, but just wanted to help

Encoding with 16:9 aspect ratio isn't really about having a "sharper picture". It's just that if you're going to fill the whole screen without distorting the aspect ratio, the left and right side of the 16:9 image will be cut off (after all, your screen is nearly square, right(4:3)).

It's not a matter of "filling in the blanks". It's just a physical inevitability. You must choose: cut off part of the screen, distort the image, or view it in 16:9 with black on top and bottom.

When you see movies on TV or video in full screen, they usually crop the image, but the luxury they have is to be able to pick which portion of the image to appear on screen whenever they wish. So they'll "pan and scan" the whole 16:9 image to whereever the action is. I don't know of any encoding tools that let's you change your cropping parameters during the actual movie. So if you'll want 4:3 you'll only focus on the center portion of the screen and you will inevitably miss things.

That being said, I don't know why you don't just use 16:9. It's very nice, just use that.

That's what I thought. Thanks for your input guys I appreciate it. i'll see if i cant crop the image a little and make it bigger. i can live with a little distortion. maybe increasing the resolution will make this a little less noticiable?? I dont know. i'll play around with it. Since I dont have a stand alone DVD player and plenty of HD space left i dont have to worry about burining them to SVCD so i can play around with them all i want.

Thanks you guys,
Shawn

I still don't know why you don't just encode it at 16:9 letterbox resolution. Just what's so bad about it?

Its not that i dont like the 16:9 its just that i dont like the large areas of black unused screen. like i said i dont have a stand alone DVD player so i cant watch my movies on my regular TV so i have to watch them on my computer. I just want to make the screen shot larger so i see whats going on better from a little farther away. I dont want to have to be sitting right in front of my computer screen in order to watch a movie. it would just be nicer to be able to watch the movie from my comfortable couch and not from the hard folding chair that is currently occupying the space in front of my computer desk.

Like i said i will just play around with what i've got. who knows, i might just keep it at 16:9 and increase the number of pixels used by the movie. i'll have to wait until i get home again though. thanks again for your input guys.
