This one's for the REAL tech heads:
Basically, all my icons look like one of those can't open joints(select from the internet or program list). As usual, Googling didn't help. I first rebooted, and then, neither my Ad-Aware nor Sygate starts up now and are asked to be given an option.
I want to know if there's a way to fix it. And no, the registry does not allow me to Import the reg.exe file d/l from here:
http://filext.com/faq/broken_exe_association.php
Also, someone with the same problem:

As I'm sure you know, regedit.exe, regedit.com, safe mode, etc. are all failures. It's quite frustrating and, though I'm not computer savvy, I hope I can walk you through it. The first thing to do is download the EXE File association fix from http://www.dougknox.comHowever, because your computer is ridiculous and stupid, you'll have to download from a different computer onto a floppy. Secondly, you'll need to go to start>run "regedit". Yes, you'll get that error box. Click "Open with" or whatever it is and browse through to regedit.exe This will be found in C:\Windows\ Do that and then hopefully it will open for you. If not, go to any common folder, i.e. My Documents, click tools, folder options, tab to file types. Click new, type .lnk Click advanced and scroll to "Shortcut". Click new again, type .exe, click advanced, scroll down to Application. Then try the regedit again. It should work, and, assuming it does, you might want to MANUALLY follow the steps provided here: http://filext.com/info/showthread.php?t=12 After that's all said and done, you should have your .exe's back and your .lnk's where they need to be. THEN RUN A VIRUS SCAN! PLEASE! Trend Micro's Housecall is acceptable. Viruses can and do cause this, so it doesnt hurt to check. Or, you know, you could just fix it and the next time you reboot it comes back, you know, whatever. Just do it. Hope this helps, enjoy. <Jew855>
Well File types option was the first that came in my mind, when ii had this problem but i cant add new filetype, new option is inactive. Everything is opening in notepad. all shortcuts are gone, notepad icon is everywhere. DaBoss says in FAQ that imprt the downloaded file thorgh File>Import Menu Item> the file..... i cant find imprt menu item option, i use xp sp2 and it gives the only option IMPORT which is not importing the winxp reg fix.reg . i am stuck and cant find the solution. Please help me out, i wish there is a way other than formatting the hard drive and installing everything again.
thx
peace and tia
