I?ve read of so many people having problems I thought I?d go through how I solved these problems some of which I haven?t seen solutions for elsewhere despite a hell of a lot of searching.
Ok, you ordered the right lid for your ps2 but it just doesn?t seem to fit, it catches the power and eject buttons, the white disc doesn?t contact right and the disc spins making awful noises so you have to sit on the lid to make it work and you also get the ?not a valid PS2 disc? message. Read on.
I had all these, here?s how I fixed them. I am NOT going to tell you how to disassemble your PS2, this is covered in a million other forums and threads. SEARCH!!
1.This covers all the problems apart from the ?not a valid PS? disc
Ok, out of the box you have the lid and a bunch of plastic bits (hey I?m keeping it simple). First thing to do is check that you have the right pieces for your version, I was sent the bits for v4-8 and in a separate packet the ones for v9-10, the one I was doing was a v9.
If you don?t know which is which just look inside your original PS2 lid, it?s incredibly easy to match them up visually. The central one isn?t a problem, it should be a tight push fit and as it is held in place securely when the case is screwed back together it isn?t a problem.
The one behind the reset and eject buttons is a problem though. You can?t rely on the push fit alone to hold it in place. You are going to be screwing into this to hold the top of the case secure thus stopping the ?skidding disc/grinding noises and having to put pressure on the flip top lid? problem.
Locate the right position making sure it matches the position in the original PS2 lid and, *****GLUE IT IN!***** It MUST be securely attached to the lid to work! I used nail glue (false fingernails, yes, I?m a woman and I mod consoles, shock horror!) as it?s pretty safe on plastic and creates a good bond. I guess ordinary superglue would be fine, but I?m sure someone will mention it if it isn?t the case. Make sure you give it time to set, I left mine overnight.
Step 2. My new lid wasn?t a good fit. They come with manufacturing burs and these need to be smoothed off for a good fit. Just go round the inside edges that will contact the bottom half of the case and scrape these off with a flat edge. I used the end of a metal nail file, though a small flat bladed screwdriver would do the same job. I also had a problem with the holes for the eject and reset buttons catching so I just filed those out until they didn?t catch. I also had to do the same for the disc tray slot.
Don?t be confused by the guides that tell you to fix the eject/reset assembly to the flip top lid if yours is fixed to the lower half of the case (as mine was). Leave it, it doesn?t need moving unless its actually fixed to your old ps2 lid.
I also found that the Flip Lid catch (at the front, to close the flip lid fully) was very stiff, hard to close and in profile it was an L shape. I filed the sharp corner at 45 degrees which gave a much easier fit whilst still being secure. Just don?t overdo it, do a little then check, stop when it clicks shut without excessive effort but still holds the lid down.
If you now have a good fit then re-assemble making sure you put the right screws in the right holes! Don?t go mad and over tighten the screws, just make sure its secure without overdoing it and breaking something.
If you have done all this then you will be able to load a disc without anything else sat on the lid for pressure and it will not make that horrible scratching noise. In short, it works properly.
2.The damn thing won't load backups!
That?s all done and now you put in your swap magic disc which works fine, but as soon as you open the lid and insert your backup, you get the ?not a valid PS2 Disc? error and if you try to eject the tray the disc isn?t sitting flat in the tray?
This is because when loading the swap magic disc or a regular retail PS2 disc via the tray eject/load (ie used normally) the tray slides the disc in and it is then lifted from the tray by the central spindle. Ok, load the swap magic dvd and wait for the ?load program? screen. Now WITHOUT removing the swap magic disc take a good look. At 11 o?clock on the discs outside edge you will notice a plastic lip ever so slightly overhanging the disc. This sucker is the problem. This is for when the PS2 is used on its end to stop the disc flopping around. Now if you remove the SM dvd and just casually drop in your backup, it will sit on this lip and cause the ?not a valid disc? message, BECAUSE the disc is not sitting on the spindle and can?t spin, thus the laser can?t read it.
You have to insert the game making sure that it goes in at a slight angle so that the edge goes UNDER the lip. As long as you have a good burn on good media this will load every time.
It frustrated the hell out of me as I have a slimline i modded with a flip top (also needed adjustment, I may cover that if this post proves useful)and that plays all my backups perfectly.
I just noticed that the discs weren?t sitting on the spindle properly after swapping out the SM disc and dropping in the backup and after looking carefully I spotted the lip and went ?Ahhhhhh?. Since spotting that I have not had one game fail to load first time.
