There have been a lot of questions asking how to brick or make their PSPs stop working so they can return them. So heres some ways to brick/break it. But first, why do you need to brick/break it? If your PSP is 2.80 or lower, you can downgrade without an unpatched copy of GTA: LCS. Also, you should think it through because what are you going to do if you the store will not take it back? Before doing anything that might end up with you not having a PSP anymore, think it all the way through. Also, doing this can be considered as a scam and is illegal. That being said, heres some ways to brick/break your PSP or just act stupid.

Bricking:
1. The most common way, upgrade to a higher firmware then pull all the power half/part way into the upgrade.

Breaking:
1. Take some sort of semi-skinny object to scratch up the lens in the UMD tray so it stops reading disks.

2. Fish around with a metal object in the PSP to try and short out some contacts.

3. Submerge the PSP in water(WITHOUT the battery or AC connected) for awhile then pull it out and let it dry.

4. Jab the speakers at the bottom of the PSP then say the volume doesnt work.

5. If you have access to something to do this, send a very strong power surge through one of the power inputs.

Just acting stupid(best way):
1. Say it wouldnt connect to your OPEN router or other hotspots.(idea from DJchemist)

2. Say it doesnt read disks right and locks up alot.

3. Say the LCD flickers alot and sometimes goes out.

4. Say it doesnt read your memory sticks right.

5. Say it skips while playing songs/movies.
(These just use common sense, what can be wrong with it without them being able to check the problem right then and there? And yes, some of these can be checked in the store.)

From Amir89(parts of original post):
Reasons you shouldnt try to break(not brick, break):
1. Warranties do not COVER DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE USER or "accidents". As surprising as it may seem not all store staff are idiots, pretty obvious signs of damage like scratched UMD lens, broken battery terminals, broken speakers and short circuits are going to make it very hard to convince ppl the PSP just 'broke' one day. Trust me they will examine your PSP and open it up to at least see if any repairs are possible. Most stores will usually keep the PSP for a few days and then if it is truly ruined they will refund or replace it.

2. If you truly want to do this sorta thing the best way is not to BREAK it in any obvious way but to act dumb and give them as little information as possible. Simply say it won't load a certain game, you can't play music on it, etc, etc...

Pretend you have no idea what happened and your not computer literate and before you go permanently bricking your PSP at least call up the store you bought it from and inquire as to whether they will cover your "INSERT YOU EXCUSE HERE" damages and how they will compensate you. You may be to forced to send it Sony(who charge ridiculous shipping), or they may only offer to refund your money not give you another PSP.

Also different stores have different return policies, so before you attempt to scam stores lol, THINK IT THROUGH!!!"

Theres a lot of other ways to brick/break them or act stupid, but heres what comes to my mind at the minute. Now please stop asking how to brick/break your PSP.

Note: I DO NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANYTHING CAUSED TO YOUR PSP BECAUSE OF YOUR DECISION TO TRY AND SCAM THE STORE TO GET YOUR MONEY BACK OR EXCHANGE.

hahaha dude.....

I appreciate your effort trying to help ppl, but I wouldn't seriously attempt any of these methods apart from bricking it during an update (which is a software defect and is warranty covered) because:

2. I don't think we really need a "guide" as to how to break your PSP, while some ppl do want to attempt these scams, I don't think it's really an important issue, I'm sure if you can't wait for homebrew and this is your only method I don't really care either way, but it is kinda borderline on the illegal side.

Also different stores have different return policies, so before you attempt to scam stores lol, THINK IT THROUGH!!!

Remember if something goes wrong and you don't get a refund or replacement you've pretty much ruined a perfectly good PSP and wasted your precious money and since alot of ppl on these boards are like 13-16 (no offence) coming by another can be difficult.

This is kind of a joke and on the other hand, kinda serious. People keep asking how to brick or break their PSPs so they can take it back. Its gettin kind of annoying so I just put this up. This is mainly meant for the idiots that want to destroy their perfectly fine PSP(except for whatever they want to return it for) just so they can return or exchange it.
*added suggestions*

I don't really have anything against doing this hell I've done it myself but as you said WeirdName people do keep asking questions about this stuff so we should give them some advice before they attempt to commit fraud ahaha.

Just to add, I've also been told you can return Sony Products to Sony Hardware Stores (only major retailers) and ask them for a replacement directly. That's a good option if you cbf sending it to Sony or the place where you got it from won't accept it.

This should be taken with a grain of salt and shouldnt really be taken seriously unless your planning to actually start a thread asking how to brick/break your PSP so you can exchange or return it.

Doesnt expecting the unexpected make the unexpected expected and therefore mean youre expecting the expected which was the unexpected until you expected it?

Hey you never know alot of ppl have returned their perfectly good PSP's and exchanged them for new ones.

I bricked my old one on purpose and I kept thinking no way on Earth they would buy the fact that it just decided to brick about 2 months after I bought it and so on and I'm sure they wouldn't refund my money, but I went to store I got from, pretty much told em my lame excuse and all they did was scan my serial and call the manager and that was it, I got a new PSP.

Yeah but really, there are other ways to get homebrew if your that impatient, I'd say finding an unpatched copy of GTA:LCS is alot less troublesome than trying to brick your PSP and return it.
