Problem burning to a RW ND 3520A

I am running Windows XP Home.

I have an Optical Drive _NEC DVD_RW ND-3520A (DVD+R9:4x, DVD-R9:4x, DVD+RW:16x/8x, DVD-RW:16x/6x, DVD-ROM:16x, CD:48x/24x/48x DVD+RW/DVD-RW)

When I insert a disk with files on it I can open and read those files okay.

However, regardless of the size of those files, the disk reads full and I am unable to add more files to that disk.

If I delete/remove those files so that there is nothing on the disk, it still reads full and I am unable to burn anything to that disk.

I also have new disks that I just purchased (HP cd-rw 4x 12x 80min / 700MB) but when I insert those I get the same message that the disk is full and I can not burn any files to those disks.

Someone suggested that I try to download the NEC 3520A firmware to maybe solve the problem but when I go to do that I am getting warning messages that the firmware could destroy my Optical Drive.

As I had said, the device is working okay except for this "full disk" burning problem.

Can anyone suggest what the best thing that I might do?

Should I take a chance and download the firmware or is there something else that might solve this?
