Quick question about a ps2 mod....

My friend wants to sell me his modded ps2 but he doesn't know what mod chip was installed as the system was not his to begin with. I only want to use the system to play import games regularly and US games. He tells me it plays back up games just fine.

My question is, can this system play imported games? Do all mods allow you to play imported games? Are there any mods out there that only allow you to play back-up games and not imported games? Should I be worried and consider not buying it?

Just to add, this is how the convo was...

Me : Hey. I want to buy that PS2 your selling. Will it play import games? I won't have to swap CDs to play games rights?

Him : It will play NTSC coded games. There is no need for swapping you just put in the burned dvd and it works. There are instructions in the box how to use the mod-chip. You can play burned games or when you want to play originals you hold the power button for 3 seconds and it turns off the chip.

Me : Alright. What mod chip is installed? So will it play import games or not?

Him : I do not know the mod-chip model but it will play ALL burned games. I bought this game in Canada so I do not know if it will play japanese games but it should since it is NTSC.

Me : Ok..

LOL, that conversation was like a political debate. lots of talking and no real answers.

NTSC just means it is a games from the US reagion and NTSC-J is Japan
PAL is Europe and Austrailia.
Without knowing the modchip you are just taking a chance. Most good mod chips will play imports, yes.
That is because a good modchip can be installed in all three region's PS2's
A good modchip will not just play NTSC back ups, but also imports and PAL back ups.

I think the chip might either be a Modbo 3.0 or 4.0 (which ever works with the slimline PS2)

How does this chip compare to the top 3 mod chips? (i.e. Crystal, Matrix, DMS4)

I am only going to play Import + Original copy games to let everyone know.

It is a clone chip. If all you need is something to play back up discs then it should work.
here is what the site says:
"PLAYS ALL THE CD＊S and DVD＊S Games (both, Import or Backup＊s)"

i do not have one so i can not tell you 100% that it will, but they claim it will.
