What is the best format to play movies for a media center application?

What I want is to take my dvds and rip them to my computer and play them with my media center server in my home theater. Currently I use DVD Shrink and Nero. I know how to get the iso and VOB files using DVD Shrink, but which program will allow me to convert an iso or VOB file to a file that would best play off the hard drive? mpeg? AVI? DivX? ....? I know, I could just put a dvd in the player and play the movie, but I want everything on my hard drive. Space is not a problem.

I just don't know where the best place to start is. Any help is appreciated.

With Auto Gordian Knot, you get DVD to AVI what is good format to play that movie in the computer: http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=AutoGK

Thanks for the reply. I just installed AutoGK, so far it looks like a strait forward program. It looks like on the input file it wants one file, but I have maybe 6-7 VOB files just for the video, should I use a different format? Or will any one VOB file work?

Put first IFO file to input.
Edit: Then it can read the dvd's information.
