Replacing entire dvd drive

hey folks. I have a version 5 ps2(30001 R), with a seemingly damaging mobo. The dvd drive however works fine. My question is, can I use this drive for replacement on any other model? Thanks.

Only on other motherboards that support your current laser. 400B/C lasers are interchangeable, as are HD7 and R lasers. You can change types by running Lenschanger if I'm not mistaken.

Hmm, sounds a bit complicated. Well, I managed to find a 30001 R on ebay with a DRE. Thanks for the help though.
