Is it possible play backups on one of the small PS2's?
Preferably without a mod chip...

Yes, it is possible to play backups but you WILL need a modchip or SwapMagic. Your slim PSTwo will not play backups just out of the box.

Yes, swapmagic disk(s) + magic keys since you don't want a modchip.
