if he is at 2.81- the reason he will want to upgrade is so he can use the 3.03 downgrader. but if he doesnt no how to upgrade, then what are the odds of him being able to downgrade lol. thats why i refused to answer the question, because if i tell him the chances are he will brick his psp lol. so i done him a favour really

download the 3.03 update from http://pspupdates.qj.net and place the EBOOT.PBP in the UPDATE folder inside the GAME folder then run the flasher

dont do anything stupid like remove the memstick or umplugging the AC adaptor etc...
