USB Advance- Hard Drive not recognized, so frustrated... help:-(

I just purchased a brand new LaCie 250GB external hard drive. I followed this thread [url=http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/250563][/url] and i followed the instructions. I formatted the hard drive in windows to ntfs. Then I opened usb extreme tools and formatted again. I have the original disc (NTSC) of Prince of Persia: Two Thrones. I Followed the guide and put the image on the hard drive with USB Extreme tools. When I load USB Advance with Swap Magic 3.6 it says my hard drive is not connected; no device in USB! What am I doing wrong? Can anybody help? Ive been reading post after post and I cant find an answer. Please help me...thank you

i cant remember the link to the site (its in a thread somewhere, just have a look)
by the sounds of it a. ur hdd may not b compatible and b. the game might not b compatible.
another member may b able to give u a direct link to the 2 sites so u can check the compatibility.
try another game till then perhaps.

So far, ive tried a few games. Ultimate Spiderman, Megaman X Collection, Red Dead Revolver, and Dirge of Cerberus. Theyre all coming from the original discs. Maybe its not compatible with my hard drive then? That would be extremely disappointing as I picked it for under $100 and thought it was a great deal!

I'm using official USB extreme disc so not sure if this helps,anyway this has worked for me on a few games.seems like you have done already most of this:
format as ntfs,then use win usb extreme URL http://www.hdadvance.com/download/USBExtreme_wininst.zip
to format as fat32 on PC
you can also use this to convert games to hard drive.I have read you must use original game and not a copy(backup)
when loading if you get error screen try turning off ps2,unplug usb and turn off HD(mine has a power button)plug in usb turn on HD then try again,a few times just wiggling the usb connector worked,why the reset works, I have no idea but usually after 2-3 tries mine is recognized.If you have black screen its usually a good thing(the software is thinking I guess)more than 5-10 min you are not loading,wish it worked better-I guess I'll get a chip.($100.00)

When I format the hard drive through windows, i for4mat it to ntfs. When i format again in usb extreme tools, should i be formatting it to fat32? I dont think i have that as an option. In the drop down menu im pretty sure all i have is ntfs. Im using swap magic, so if this doesnt work its not the end of the world- i hear the compatibility isnt good with usb extreme anyway. Id love to get a chip installed, but theyre so expensive (chip + install, i have no idea how to solder nor would i try). I used to have a matrix infinity on my old fat ps2 and i loved it. But i guess swap magic will have to do for now.

Yes,only after researching forums and such(after I purchased USBEXTREME)I learned,It just doesnt work too well.Your problem may well be the format of HD,use the tool I listed and this will format to fat32.I tried several tools,Ultra ISO,Apache2,and apache3.even used emulator tools pcxs2t to extract as iso but best results came using usbextreme tools,straight from original ps2 disc,cmd and win version about the same so far.Although consensus is the problem lies in slow USB 1 speed,actual game play seems ok on games that work,here are a few sites for further research.

Thanks for the replies thus far. I knew going into this that the compatibility for the usb extreme wasnt good, but i never thought id have this much trouble just getting the ps2 to recognize the hard drive. Ill try checking those links out and see if i can get it to work somehow. It really is a shame that more effort wasnt put into developing a better product. I would think that a working/high-compatible usb extreme type device would be a great seller and wouldnt be that complicated either. I wonder why this hasnt been persued...

Yes I agree,but it has.Problem short answer:
$ony Technology Protection,the best in the business IMHO.
long answer:The PS2 boot process utilizes a physical fault or warble in the disk,and assorted other protection methods that vary between game developers.These cannot be easily duplicated,although various methods come close.
Answers: Mod Chip,exploits,alternate boot disc,most require cash or credit card for retail versions.
Freeware ? can be done but tricky and complicated.
I'm new at this and not easily stumped or frustrated but as far as easy solution for backup and HD play the only solution is Mod chip + install=
$100(I hope)wish I had bought an old fat PS2.
