Maybe this question has been answered elswhere but im still gonna ask it!!..Ive got a movie file in Xvid/AVI format ..... and i have all needed codecs installed. I burnt a copy with Nero6 today(letting Nero encode it) into a VCD format so i could fit it on a couple of CDR's. The quality came out ok(little blurry) and sound was great but... im trying to keep as much of the origional Xvid quality i possibly can as it is DVD Rip. I was wondering how i could encode it and would SVCD be that much better in the end product. I was initially trying to stay away from SVCD as i dont really wanna have 3-4 CDR's to watch 1 movie!! i know a DVD burner is another choice but who has $400AU lying around!!
Any help would be grateful.

SVCD is much better quality than VCD. I use TMPGEnc to encode to SVCD (MPEG2) and then use Nero to burn to SVCD to CD. It will probably take 2-3 CDRs.

1. If you have a decent XviD movie, encoding it to VCD shouldnt yield a significant quality drop -- only if you play it on a TV... I was profoundly surprised to see that the quality of a VCD when played on a TV was actually quite good -- goes to say something about the video quality of TVs ;-)

2. If you want to maintain the quality of your XviD movies and play them on a TV, perhaps you should look into the KISS/Lite-On standalones which play XviD movies

3. SVCDs provided a marked video improvement over VCDs and can actually almost be enjoyed when watching on a computer.

You have to decide though whether you want to spend 3 SVCDs, 2 VCDs or 1 AVI file. No unless you want to watch movies on your computer or on a KISS/Lite-On standalone, you will have to choose between VCDs and SVCDs.
