hello

I am creating back-ups of dvds for personal use and creating them as AVI files on CDR for playback on my computer. I would like to know how I can convert or rip into a different format so I can play these copies on a standalone dvd player. Any tips would be useful, and as I am a complete novice so far, easy to understand instuctions always appreciated!!

You can re-encode your avis to VCD or SVCD but there will be a loss in quality. Although, since youre dealing with a dvd-rip and assuming you encoded the AVI with high quality settings the loss of quality shouldnt be that noticeable, especially when watching on your TV. Afterdawn provides guides that'll help you.
Or if you want to re-rip your dvds and encode them as vcds or svcds you can find guides that will help you out on afterdawn.

Or you might want to purchase a standalone player that supports mpeg-4 (avi) playback. You can find some on this list that are sold at very reasonable prices. Id recommend this method since the quality of vcds and svcds pale in comparison with that of a decently encoded AVI.

Might I suggest you try SVCD. Only problem is you will have to pay for an encoder because TMPGEnc has a 30 day trial and the trial of CCE SP has a logo planted on the movie, eeeeek!

CCE SP has basically superior quality for MPEG-2 files so if you would even want to try it out, use it with DVD2SVCD for the best results at 4 pass encoding :-)
