I have the same system now for over a year. Pretty powerful dedicated DVD burning system, run bare bones no virus software and nothing to slow me down.

Win XP Pro
Pentium 4
2.0 gig
1.2 gig RAM
100g hard drive, you get the idea.

So I had the old version 4 & 5 of Nero I used to burn with my Sony DRU500. Same old story, use firmware x and burn at 2x but not 4x. Use firmware z and burn 4x but not 2x.

So last week I installed the new NERO 6 and removed the old versions of Nero. Everything still works as before. However, a friend of mine brought over some Ritek 4x blank DVD-R's to burn some movies for him on my system.

Sure enough, Nero inidcated 4x blanks and burned them at 4x with my old 1.0d sony firmware. Prior to installing Nero 6 the firmware did not allow 4x burning on 4x Riteks, I tried it many times with a 2x maz speed.

So in closing, since the only thing that changed since my last attempt with Ritek 4x is Nero 6 so maybe the same upgrade for you will also yield the same results.

* Disclaimer: This batch of 4x was not from the same lot as prior 4x discs. I have since ordered more 4x from yet another batch and I will return to comment in a weeks time if the new batch work as the most recent batch did or if I am back to burning at 2x.

It's either the batch or NERO, we'll see.

Just wanted to update that it was most definitely the new Nero 6 that allowed me to burn 4x media at 4x. This is something you might want to try before you start flashing your sony firmware.
