My Swap Magic DVD makes a horrible clicking sound when I try to use it, and regularly I get a "Cannot read disc" error. This is *before* the swap; the problem is with the DVD. I get the same kind of noise from HDAdvance so I'm not sure it's a defective disc. I cleaned and adjusted the lens just to be sure, but since I'm having absolutely no trouble with any other discs, it's not the lens that's the problem.

I've discovered that I can get a more reliable boot from Swap Magic if I put an original DVD game disc in first, then eject and switch to Swap Magic. What happens is that the original DVD game causes the same clicking sound (if I've been trying to use Swap Magic, that is; normally, that sound doesn't happen with originals). If I *don't* get the clicking sound from the original DVD, then Swap Magic will not work if I put it in next. But if I do get the click, Swap Magic will work (even though it will still click).

It seems to me that Swap Magic is forcing the lens gear out of alignment. Probably the horizontal alignment, not the vertical; it sounds like it's smacking against the side of the drive. By putting in an original DVD and getting the click, the lens is going back into alignment... until I use Swap Magic, which after the first use will knock the lens out of alignment again so that SM won't load a second time.

Has this happened to anyone else? Is it a defective disc? Is there something mechanically messed up with my PS2? It's a chubby PS2 (v4, I think), so I have to use the slide tool... could that be knocking things around?

Is it most likely, near almost definite a possibility that it is indeed a bonafide defective disc you may have gotten. If it isn't, then I can't help you. But the situation you've described, is all too familiar from what I've experienced especially. See if you can get another copy from the location you bought it from. The reason why your disc is defective? Importional to your clip belt that holds the disc in place. Same thing with me. It was too small and wouldn't hold on too well so I had it replaced. Good luck on yours.

EDIT: it makes clicking noises? well, I've heard solutions on applying some grease but I personally think you'd be better off trying to get another copy or testing another SM disc you may have around you if possible to see if it is just that one defective disc your using. As for the grease, I'm dunno a single thing other then that, sorry.

here's a thought....when i first got my flip top i had the same problem i contacted customer service and they told me that i may need to loosen the screws since the flip top is a bit slimmer than the original case. i took the plastic covers off and took about a turn off each screw and no more clicking sound and my ps2 has worked great ever since. try putting in a music cd or regular game. if you still get the clicking sound i would try loosening the screws on the back.
