I've heard that the 8 speed recorders are coming out later this year,I'd just like to know if anyone has heard if we'll have media fast enough to use at 6 or 8X speeds. anyone hear of any new developments? My A05 isn't bad,but faster would be better! thanks!

No media has been released to date for -R 8x recording. However, i believe +R is in the pipeline for a release. I would expect Christmas time to bring out 8x media and drives.

Certified 4x +R media being sold today will burn at 8x. Discs made by MCC (Mitsubishi chemical corp), which is a OEM manuf. for Verbatim, Pioneer, Fuji and others will burn at 8x, and Ricoh Japan made 4x +R discs will also burn at 8x on the Plextor 8x drive which is imminent. So in a way, the answer is the media is available today.

I should have mentioned that that information came from Plextor, and is not speculation on my part.
Plextor will be releasing (or perhaps has already) a list of existing media that they certify to burn at 8x on their recorders, which is composed of currently available 4x +R media.

Yeah, i knew that ;-) - i was reading the review on their site. It looks very interesting, but i wouldnt really fancy burning 4x media at 8x on DVD's, considering the high risk of error at 4x at the min!

Plextor drives have been my favorite, but they have chosen to go to the + format ,and all I've heard or read has been that the - format is more compatible with most players.I'm using the Pioneer A05 - format recorder at this time with great results (not 1 coaster yet) but, back to the subject of media, does this also mean that the Ritek 4X discs I'm currently using will also burn at 8X (i think not)I'm waiting for the 8X Pioneer or Plextor drives and certified media.

No, the Ritek media you are using will not be certified. Check out www.conrexx.com for information on certified Ritek and retailers. The DVR107 should be out around christmas with 8x Pioneer Discs to mathc. however, it will not be a true 8x burner. It will be 6-8x at different points on the disc.

I'm patient, and absolutely happy burning all of my backups at 2x to minimize errors :)

Ricoh will release 8x +r end September, already sampling (here in Tokyo). The Plextor PX-708A is out today and available online for abt Yen 31K post free. A black bezel model costs Yen 1500 more.
NEC has announce an 8x +/-R drive by end-October. Media for either to be availableend-October altho AFAIK no 8X -R standard is defined by DVD Forum.
From Plextor:
"4x media that can be written at 8x are manufactured by Mitsubishi Chemical (Verbatim), Ricoh and Taiyo Yuden".
Hope this helps.
