IDE DVD-ROM 16x not properly workng anymore

hi
it doesnt read most of cd/dvd's anymore. it started during a LAN-part i think. its listed in windowsexplorer. when i insert cd, it just makes strange noises but doesnt show any content in w.-e. . in device manager it is listed as IDE DVD-ROM 16x , so what kind of drive is it? HP? no idea where to look. driver status is shown alright. id be glad if u guys could help me get it working

1. Dont worry about the double post, happens all the time hehe
2. Open up Nero InfoTools (included in the Nero Toolkit)... does it correctly detect your DVD drive?
3. Sometimes DVD drives have a difficult time reading wierd CD formats.... does it read "regular" discs?
4. Try uninstalling the drive and rebooting
5. ASPI?

the drive read all kinds of cds before that day, i already did format c: to set the computer into factory sttings. my virtual drives started fonctioning after format c: but dvd-drive not.
i dont have any ASPIs installed i think

1. Well for starters, getting the issue about the ASPI out of the way would be a good idea For more information regarding ASPI see http://cd-rw.org/articles/archive/aspisetup.cfm.
2. It is possible however I have never seen it happen often that DVD drives "just" die. Usually they exhibit all sorts of symptoms prior to dying. Perhaps you might consider looking into a firmware update, that might clear up your problem For various firmwares pay a visit to http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php (or your drive's manufacturer's website)
3. I find it suspicious (odd at the very least) that Nero InfoTools reported that the Date and Serial Number for your DVD drive were unknown. This could be a symptom of your DVD drive being el' toasto
4. I notice that your DVD drive has DMA disabled . Might i reccomend you re-enable it? To Check for DMA: (1) Control Panel, (2) System, (3) Goto the Hardware Tab, (4) Device Manager, (5) IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, (6) Right Click on Primary IDE Channel --> Properties, (7) Goto the Advanced Settings Tab, Make sure both drop down boxes say 'DMA if Available', Click OK, (8) Right Click on Seconady IDE Channel --> Properties, (9) Goto the Advanced Settings Tab, Make sure both drop down boxes say 'DMA if Available', Click OK, (10) Reboot.
5. The usual stupid crap: make sure cables are plugged in completely, you are splitting too much power over too many devices etc. You might also consider uninstalling the DVD drive and rebooting (and maybe trying manufacturer drivers too might help)
6. I have a suspicious feeling your DVD drive is toasted hehe.

"Something something, something just ain't right". Praetor gave you excellent advice and I would encourage that you slide the dvd-rom out of its bay and get the vendors info so we can find out who makes your dvd-rom. A firmware update "might" be the fix here.

hi all
please i mean no offence only to help out! i have had guy on msn a newbie for 6 hours all day! i helped him dvd to dvd...
it was just that i read mega loads of posts here and have done for a while but man yours is the biggest so far i have ever seen!
when these problems happen like yours i do this! uninstall the drives in device manager and reboot so windows can load them up fresh! check eide connections to drives as you carry your to parties!
check ASPI layer is installed ok? or instal again! have you loaded any software that conflict? like easy cd creator and i think some other program have known issues with each other!
