IDE DVD ROM 16x not properly working anymore

hi

since some day on a lan-party, my dvd-drive doesnt read most of cds anymore. when i insert a cd, it makes strange noises, like it wants to "rotate" but then it slows down and tries again. in windows explorer, the drive is shown but not the inserted cd. in device manager it is only shown as IDE DVD ROM 16x so i dont know what kind of drive it is (HP, Sony?, no idea). the driver status is shown alright.
