Hi all I am a newbie to this stuff. I want to backup my dvd-movies before my sisters kid gets a hold of them. (you know the running baby playing patty cake with your dvd-movies on the coffee table, gotta love her)

any how I ust bought a Pioneer DVR-A04.
and i already ruined a dvd-r. I read some where that you can just drag and drop the files like a cd-copy. Nope cant do that!!

Does anyone have a guide on how to backup up my movies to dvd-r.
Or is there a one step process guide for backing up dvd-movies

Sorry, there's no drag&drop solution for DVD backups. Only easy situation is when the movie happens to be single-layer disc, i.e. smaller than 4.36GB including all the files on DVD. Then you can follow our guide at our article pages (http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/). But other than that, you normally need to either split the movie to two DVD-R or try to re-encode it to fit on one DVD-R (as DVD-R can only hold 4.36GB of data per side and "real" DVD csn hold 8.5GB of data per side).
Read through the DVD to DVD-R forum in here, there are some really good guides and instructions available. Read through and study and go through the trial and error and _then_ if you have problems, post your questions in here.
P.S. I feel your pain, I've got 3-year-old daughter... ;-)

Been there with the rug-rat problem. If you have many movies to back up, you might want to consider a small investment in some additional HD memory. I'm thinking in terms of a small 10GB or 20GB USB addition. That will give you enough space to work.
Now you can take advantage of several fine (free) programs to rip (take away it's copy protection and open up it's files) and shrink (compress) your movie to the 4.36GB size you need in order to burn it to a single DVD.
(Oh Brother, I can hear you saying under your breath, I don't know anything about this stuff and I don't have time to learn.)
Not a problem, you only need 1 simple program to do it all for you and there are step by step guides for you to follow ?
Difficult, no, 3 or 4 mouse clicks and you are ready to burn.
A single movie will take you 10 - 15 minutes of your time and under 2 hours of your computer's time.

Hi felipe007, I would start by going to the guides section and printing out the guides for DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter. Read them over and see which one is easier for you to understand. Then download that program. Ask any questions you have. There will be someone on here that can answer. I always suggest you burn to a DVD RW disc 1st until you get it to work. The RW may not always play in a stand alone player but it should play on your computer and you can see if everything went OK. Jerry

I have been at this for a while, and this is what I find to work best for me. I use DVD Decrypter which you can find on this site. I have spent so much time frustrated with using different programs,And I have found that it is better to invest a little money for programs that have better features. I use DVD2One and Recornnow max 4.50. I make 2 folders on my desktop (make sure to leave adiquite space to rip your dvds) I use file mode in DVD Decrypter and select all files to decrypt. Save them to folder 1. Then I choose, in DVD2One sorce, folder 1, Destination folder 2. I keep file size around 4400 (because outer edges of a lot of dvds are picky). Then open Recordnow max and choose Data mode, go to options and switch not closed to closed (you will see it). Choose your recorder from the top, insert media, minimize program, Rename folder 2 to VIDEO_TS, go to add files or folders and add that whole folder (not any file inside)and let the laser sizzle. No menu's, no bull. Just a simple run through of how I back up my investments. You can find lots of tutorials that will help you with these programs. Good luck.

As you can see, all of these solutions require that you have a heck of a lot more HD space than you have - Sooooo, back to square 1 -
This stuff is easy and there are a ton of guys out here ready to lend you a hand, a 20GB, USB hard drive will take care of business for you. An ebay hard drive, fan and case will run you in the $50.00 area -

Hi Pete, This stuff IS easy! For fun I went back and looked at my first postings. Koola and others explaining to me that I couldn't use +R media in my -R burner, and I thought the green bar in Shrink was telling me how much space I had on my hard drive etc. HEHE! I was deleting programs off my hard drive and that bar just wouldn't move! It was easy for me to forget the initial struggle but not the folks who helped me through it.

If you just want a app that backups ur DVD-5/9 to one dvd go with Elbys CloneDVD, and use DVD Region-Free in order to read CSS encrypted DVD's in CloneDVD.
IF you want to make a perfect DVD copy of DVD-9's then go with DVDFab.

I have purchased DVDXcopy and it works like a champ. It very easy to use. and i normally just want to backup my movies with no extra's.
the software strips all extras and fits an entire movie on one dvd-r.
