I am having problems burning Arita 4x DVD+R discs at maximum speed. Using Veritas RecordNow DX supplied in bundle with the drive, the disc won't be burned and I get this SCSI error:
Sense: 2A Command: 03 ASC: 0C ASCQ: 08
Tried on 2 different disks and the burning process always halted at sector 304.
From info that I found on the web, it appears that this problem (which description is "Recovery failed", don't know exactly what it means) is media related. It is anyway not clear to me if it is media fault or burner fault.
The ID of the discs is RICOHJPNR01. Ricoh discs are on the certified media list for the Sony.
Have used these Arita 4x +R discs on a Pioneer 106, i wouldn't personally call these discs A+ quality even though they seem to use Ricoh's dye formulation. Their manufactured by Ritek , not Ricoh themselves so don't know how good the QA is compared to the more expensive "RICOHJPNR01" discs which are sold under other brands. They are under £1 here in the UK so i wouldn't really expect them to be as good as more expensive +/-R discs. Their not bad but not something i'd use for those really important backups.
I too have used the Arita blanks on the same drive.
I have now tried the arita+r 2x, 4x and some 'zero defex' also some dvd-r orange bulkpak (awful cr@p = costers > 45%) and some white top's, what I've noticed is the arita 4x would not burn at 4x (1st one did then rest failed).
My temp fix for this is to limit the burn speed, I'm in no hurry to get my few dvd's burn't and it only takes 40 mins anyway (remember doing cd's years ago?).
If you can locate some of the Zero Defex (not the blue tops, the brown tops are the ones I'm on about), these I have found to be good, but they keep sending the blue tops which are not as reliable on my setup.
A 2.4x burn takes 40 minutes? That sounds strange. It should take about 25 mins for a full disc.
It would take longer if there were a lot of errors or you couldn't pull the data fast enough.
How well do the discs work once they are burnt? What does a Nero CD Speed test look like on it, compared to other "good" media you've tried?
Well, I have never gotten Nero to produce a good DVD, I've tried but each one fails in my standalone, can't figure it out, have tried all the settings etc... but nope, won't work.
I use InstantCopy by Pinnacle, never gotten a fail yet.
As I mentioned I've limited my burn speed, this is by using the settings in InstantCopy and setting burn speed to low.
I press start, it reads the video data, creates packets and then writes, takes 40 mins and never a fail yet.
It doesn't make errors, it takes 40 mins.
I did say I'm in no hurry to get the DVD burnt.
I figure in a few years the process, equipment and media will have reached the CDr stage where you'll be guarenteed a fast quality burn 99.99% of the time. For now we're stuck with what's out there and unless you want to spend a fortune on expensive media you'll have to think of burning slow to get the results.
