I recently decided to go our and buy an ps2. Which type of 'mod' should I use. Also, what is the best, disregard price, of the chips or swap techniques. Thanks for any input.

I realize this in in the software boot discussion forum and I may get one sided answers. I would also like to know if it is 'legal' to post a similar post like this in the mod chips for ps2 forum.

Thanks
Mike

Oh yea, I have a slimline PS2

Basically swap magic is cheaper, doesnt avoid your warranty if you get the right tools, lets you play most backup games and homebrew. But you have to swap the discs out everytime u run a new game.

Modchips are more expensive, avoids your warranty by opening the console, if you dont get an expert to install it and you are not fond of soldering you can damage your console, but once installed is way better then swap magic (Also depending which chip u get, should boot up all games (I think) without swapping anything, run homebrew, psx backups.

Thats all i can think of at this moment lol. Someone else can update more.

I dont minde going the more expensive route, but the problem is, is that I dont solder good. Where could you get it professionally installed?

Simple.

Swap Magic is an easily affordable, cheap alternative method to playing import/backed-up games. If you don't want to void your warranty, doing a soft-mod allows you to do so by leaving your warranty intact. However, considering how big the PS2 library is, there's a nominal percentage of games that need rebuilding, which are usually DVD9 -- dual-layer -- games like God of War, Xenosaga, GT4 and such.

Installation of a mod-chip is actually a better method of playing import/backed-up games if you don't want to bother with the tedious process of swapping disc with each startup ('tedious' differs from person to person) and no need to rebuild games (from I've heard). The mere convienence is a huge selling point of it. The bad thing is perhaps the pricing. To those who want to 'experiment' and solder it 'themselves,' it warrants extreme precaution on their parts and precision is everything or you may end up with a bad system. Due to this, the price could be a little bit more hefty if you send it in for a professional installation. But that's all from overhearing and if I made a mistake, someone please correct me.

Ultimately, I would get the mod-chip > swap magic if I still played as much games as I did before. But as it stands now, I have almost no time to play as much these days and play on occasion.
