Thought I'd share my experiences here in the hopes that it might help someone else.

Today I flashed my new samsung ms28 with the xtreme 5.2b firmware (plays backups at 4 speed) and almost no backups would play, kept getting the dirty disk error (so although it was seeing it as a game (i wasn't getting the unrecognizable disk notice) it couldn't read the data). Even the games that did load, crashed (froze or just showed black screen) after a few minutes of play. I was totally puzzled.

Anyway I flashed the original back then reflashed with 5.2c (plays backups at 12 speed) and everything runs like a dream now, all disks load and play with no errors whatsoever. All i can assume is that 4 speed is too slow and doesn't load quick enough so the 360 shows the error of dirty disk?

Hope this might help someone with a similar problem.

what do you mean when you talk about playing backups at "4-speed" and "12-speed"?

xtreme 5.2 firmware has 4 options a, b, c, or d. These play as follows:

With Xtreme 5.2A, backups are always read at 12x speed, the same
speed as originals. The read speeds of original discs are unaffected.
With the faster reading speed, the drive is significantly louder, and
may have problems reading cheaper media, but you have the benefit
of slightly faster loading times.

With Xtreme 5.2B, backups are always read at 4x speed. The read
speeds of original discs are unaffected. With the slower reading
speed, the drive is quieter, may read cheaper media better, but has
slightly longer loading times.

With Xtreme 5.2C, the default backup read speed is 12x. When an
original disc is placed in the drive, all subsequent backups will be
read at 4x. Read speed of original game discs will remain unaffected.
Restart the system if you wish to read backups at 12x.

With Xtreme 5.2D, the default backup read speed is 4x. When an
original disc is placed in the drive, all subsequent backups will be
read at 12x. Read speed of original game discs will remain
unaffected. Restart the system if you wish to read backups at 4x.

I originally used b, but as I stated it hardly played any backups, after restoring then reflashing with c, it worked fine.

See, I used 5.2a for 4 boxes and they all worked fine. There was a 5th box I just did and sold a guy who is complaining of dirty disc errors. It is a brand new 360, so couldn't figure out the problem. All the other Samsung 360's I flashed with 5.2a were flawless in reading backups on my Dual Layers and can't figure out what's making this one different.

5.2a would always read at 12 speed so I doubt that its the same problem, but it wouldn't hurt to get it back and flash it back to original then try again with c.
