Trying to update a 2.81 before down dating

Gents, having done a few of these PSPs I find myself with a 2.81 fw trying to update before I down date with the aid of GTA. Unfortanatly whe I try to use easy updater it keep telling me to conect the PSP to the pc, which of course I have already done.
The conection to the PC is there because I can see it.
Is ther a speacial trick I need to know.
By the way it is not a TA mother board.
Your help would be much appreiciated.

just download the 3.03 update eboot and put it in the game folder and run the gta eloader and update then downgrade.

you have to upgrade to 3.03 first?
thus making the name 3.03 downgrader with unpatched gta.
