I know that the RIAA is going after people who are sharing copywrited music but are they able to go after people who just download music and don't share it? If I download music but don't share it am I safe from the RIAA?

At the moment their tactics are downloading copywritten files and listing the ip addresses that are sending the files, so you're fine for now :-)

Why use p2p if you're not going to share? That is leeching and that's just defeats the whole purpose of p2p programs.
