I was wondering what can I do with a HDD and retail HD Loader? Like running things like emulators and homebrew and stuff is that possible on my PS2?

Try HD Advance. I bought ver.2.1 and the network thingy together for 50 bucks on ebay. hooked up a seagate barracuda 80GB HDD and backed up all my favourite "legitimately purchased" games straight to HDD dead easy.
disk will even format the HDD!!!
Newer versions of HD Advance\extreme will support newer games.
