VGA to DVI problems

I am trying to connect my laptop to my DVI monitor, but I seem to be having some problems. I have a relatively new Samsung Syncmaster 940BW that I'm trying to connect to a Dell laptop. The monitor has DVI and VGA input. The VGA is being used by my Xbox 360, so I need to plug my laptop in via DVI. The laptop has a VGA output on the side.

I bought a VGA female to DVI-I male adapter. When I plug it in, the "Check Signal Cable" box disappears, but the screen is blank. Any idea on how to remedy this?
