I don't know if this belongs here. I think so. If not, sorry!

I am thinking about buying a PS2. I do not know diddly-squat about them, except that I love some of the games my friend has for them.

Okay, so here are my questions:

1. Is there ANY difference between the slimmer one and the chunkey-er one? I mean graphics, plugs, being able to play backups (though I doubt I would), anything.

(I DO NOT know all the tech-y talk people use to describe this sort of stuff, so please don't use tech-talk.)

2. Does one console work better than the other? Are there overheating problems?

3. What stuff do I need to buy for it? I know I need the console, a controller, and a memory card. What plugs are needed, etc.? I'll probably be buying one used, as I don't have much money to spend on this. I'll need all the deals I can get, but I have no clue what stuff to look for.

4. Is there stuff you have to buy to watch/use backups, DVDs, CDs, etc.?

Answer: Yes there is a difference. Most of the older models were better. They had better lasers, no overheating issues, and you can add an internal hard drive very easy (which i would do for sure)
Everything else is pretty much the same.

I would say the V7 (older chunky model) is the best PS2 i have owned, and i have had it for a while now. Here is a version chart so you can see which is which by the numbers on the sticker.

If you want the best picture then you need component cables and a TV that has component inputs. If you ever want to add a hard drive or play online you need the network adapter. Wireless controllers are really nice.

4. Is there stuff you have to buy to watch/use backups, DVDs, CDs, etc.? If you are talking about movies then no, nothing extra to buy. Although i will tell you strait up you are better off just buying a cheap DVD player (preferabley one that has DivX support.
PS2 movie playback is far from the best and not really great for your laser life.

If you are talking back up games then that is a whole differnt world.
In that case i would save your money and buy a premodded V7 at Teammodders.com with a Crystal Chip V2.0 or DMS4 Pro SE chip.
