Okay, so I'm playing with my burner... is making a backup of a backup as simple as making a DVD image with Alcohol 120% or Nero and then burning the backup? It should work just like that in theory, since you don't have to worry about removing extras or compressing data.

Also, will there be any loss in the picture quality by backing up a backup rather than the original?

If you have a seperate DVD rom drive you are better off copying the backup directly on the fly with Nero rather than making an image. The copy is an exact duplicate.

That would be an ideal setup, but I'm afraid I have only one DVD-RW drive.

Well the image will also produce a duplicate though I have to confess I've never tried it.

I have made backups from backups using Alcohol 120% without a problem, using the image making wizard then the image burning wizard

Backing up a backup, you're not going to see any degredation of the movie quality, as it's digital and is already a backup you'll end up with an identical copy.
Digital = 1's and 0's, if you copy 1's and 0's you'll get identical 1's and 0's (basically).
In fact it should be easier as there'll be no encryption on a backup and you'll not have to shrink or remove any files.
I've successfully done this for a friend, her original copy of Harry Potter 1 died, wouldn't work in any machine, even mine, it looked fine but just wouldn't work.
I had a backup of my original HP1 which I used to avoid the shrinking/extraction process. Did a straight copy with no problems and her kid was again happy.
Also this, I think, was perfectly legal as she has only 1 backup copy of her DVD.

Thanks for the tips guys, I've tried it several times now with perfect results.

Good point about the digital being just 1's and 0's. I hadn't thought of it that way, but it makes perfect sense.
