Max Sharpness vs. Max Smoothness

I have read a number of guides on shrink and used this program a great deal backing up my DVDs. However, I have been seeing some conflicting advice when it comes down to choosing smoothness and sharpness. From my own experience with shrink I have noticed several things; animated movies seem to always look good with max sharp regardless if it's below 60% compression, movies with lots of digital special effects look better with max smoothness. For regular movies, or old black and white movies , I'm never sure which to use. Is there a general rule of thumb like "greater then 60% compression use max x, less then 60% use max y"?

If you are really concerned about the end quality and time doesn't matter I would take a look at DVD ReBuilder.

You are very welcome...DVD ReBuilder will produce a quality unmatched by DVD Shrink or Nero Recode, but will take between 4X and 6X longer depending on your system specs because it actually rebuilds the video from the ground up.
