flash the drive, its cheap easy and requires no soldering, just take your time flashing it

It only costs money as far as buying the SATA card for your computer, and buying the connectivity kit (which I'm not positive that you need). There is no hard modding your 360.

I would stay away from the hard mods like the nme-360 and the Globe360.
They are really nothing more then a Firmware flash, and right now there is no way to tell what sort of impact they could have on your future 360 playing / games.
Also why risk damaging your system installing a chip, when as mikeismad says you can flash your firmware on your dvd drive for FREE (as long as you have the tools, like a Xecuter Connectivity Kit, X360 USB, or BLASTER 360)
With the Connectivity Kits you will need a SATA Card or Controller in your system, that has the VT6421A Chipset... You can find one for ~$10 here http://tekgems.com/Products/la-pci22-vt6421a.htm
With the X360 USB you do not need a SATA you can just plug it in via USB.
And the Blaster360 is the latest thing from Xecuter that you install in your system without soldering, and it will allow you to upgrade your firmware as often as you would like without having to reopen your system. It will also allow you to switch between firmware and original with the flick of a switch. But you may need an SATA card unless you have the X360 USB.
All of the above you can do to your xbox without having to solder and if for whatever reason you must remove the mod, you just restore the drive firmware to retail. You will not have to desolder a chip. so dont waste your time and potentially destroy your 360 with one of these poorly made NME-360 chips, just flash your firmware :)
You can also flash your firmware on some 360 DVD Drives without those tools as well, I am pretty sure. But with them it makes things a bit easier...
