OK here goes.

I am new to this so excuse me if you've all answered this a million times already.

I have a movie to burn to DVD and I have ULEAD, which seems to be a great tool, but...

The video I want to put on a disc is 4.9GB and there is only 4.4 GB of space on a DVD+RW.

How do I format the video so that it will fit on the DVD?

Thanks for your patience.

Use DVD Shrink.

Use DVD Shrink but the files must be DVD video compliant (i.e Video TS/Vobs/Bups), not MPEG. Alternatively just rip the original disc again directly with Shrink.

How do I get .VOB or any of the other file types from .AVI?

This has not been ripped from a disc, it is an .AVI file given to me by someone else.

I'm new!!!

Use TMPGEnc to covert .AVI to .mpeg2

Then TMPGEnc DVD Author to make .vob

You would get a better result with the Mainconcept Mpeg encoder to convert to mpeg2, then use TMPGEnc DVD Author to make the DVD files. Good luck :)

Ruddy52,

You can do it two ways assuming your original is MPEG.

1. Use TMPGAuthor or your favorite authoring software to create a compliant DVD directory (contains the .VOB,.IFO files) and then use DVDShrink to transcode it to the correct size - this option is easier but will loose more quality
2. Use TMPGEnc or Mainconcept MPEG encoder (my favorite) and re-encode the MPEG to a size below 4.3GB. Then use your authoring software to create the DVD compliant files - this is a tad more difficult since you need to know some settings in the encoder, but it will render better quality. It will also take longer to create as re-encoding is time consuming.

If your original is already in DVD compliant formant (again this would be: .VOB and .IFO files) there is no need to use an encoder, DVDShrink or any other transcoder will do the job.

A 4.9 GB AVI file will easily be under 4 GB when it is changed into an MPeg2 file.

Use DVD Shrink to rip/decrypt/compress. Then use Nero to burn. Nero uses simple drag and drop to get all files burned.

All I can say is if it's an AVI file it must be a bloody long film at over 4Gb!

What exactly does that mean?

Thanks for the help BTW Herbsman. I couldn't have done it without you.

In future if you have nothing to say that would help, then don't say anything.
