I bought a used ps2 off craigslist today for $35 dollars. The guy said it didn't play dvd movies or games at all in the ad, he did state that it did play ps1 discs. When I went over to get it he had final fantasy tactics running on it. So I took it home, opened it up and cleaned the lens with a dab of alcohol with some cotton swabs, blew in it to get the dust out, etc. I have had no luck even getting a ps1 game to work, which was running fine at his house. Anyways, I've been trying to move the little white disk a turn at a time to see if that's the problem...

Anyway, my real question is, I want to get either hdadvance or usb extreme, but if my ps1 games aren't even loading on it, I don't think a boot disc will run, let alone be able to copy an entire game. I know there is a program that lets you put the hard drive into your computer and just copy games onto that. Is that a lost cause since my ps2 drive won't read anything? Or can I somehow put something onto the memory card and run the program from there? Your help is greatly appreciated

Your pretty much stuffed if you cant run any cd's or dvd.
You might be able to put a modchip that has onboard memory in it, then stick hdloader onto that to boot up when you turn the ps2 on.
You will have to use your pc to put games onto your hdd though, and also need a network adaptor which can be quite hard to find these days, unless 2nd hand.

I can run cds fine now, I adjusted that little white disc and got it to work eventually. But as I understand the hdloader has a cd boot disc for cd games, and a dvd boot disc for dvd games, i'd imagine the dvd boot disc is actually a dvd?

I think theres just one hdloader to boot all games. And i think its actually a cd-r (Cant remember I use the ps1 exploit).
So all you would need is swap magic cd version, and burn hdloader onto cd-r and you should be sweat to go. (As long as you have all the other hardware e.g. hdd, network adaptor) Also beware that if your lazers not working to good, there might be a chance that it wont read the cd-r copy.
