Questions about use of filters with VirtualDub capture?

If I add a Deinterlace filter is does not seem to work.
The scan lines are still present.
During capture I use the following
Compression: huffy v2.1.1
Set custom format: 480 x 360

However if I capture then use the video editing section of VirtulDub. To do the deinterlace filer, the artifacts go away.
The scan lines are remove however the file size grows at least twice the size.

So do the filters work during a capture?
Why does the files increase so much in size?
