when is that mode needed? only when trying to backup games? is it needed to flash the ms28?

with new firmwares, only for ripping games, you used to need it to flash the drive i think, but once i got into the scene you didnt need it anymore, but now its needed solely to dump games to your computer

I flashed my box from 4.1 to 5.2 last week and was unable to write to my drive unless i had inserted the 0800 disk. should I have not needed to use that then?
