The 5045 is a unit that can do as you indicate.
It may be region free but it would seem not properly set up for your needs

With, the Remote press setup. On the bottom is a set of numbers starting with SN

What are they

Ps
There is NO Harm to the 5045 in any way and nothing is wiped out
I have a 5045

The numbers given indicate that the unit has firmware 197 and is not region free.
I do not think the unit has been hacked for MV or Region..

Get back I would like to know what procedure you did to feel the unit was region free and how it works out for you-

For Info
Liteon made the ilo 04 series for WalMart and the units have been refered to as Liteon/ilo. Some of the Liteon units and all ilo 04 are non compliant. [No longer made]
These units can also be hacked for analog MV as on VHS tape.

Remember the Liteon is basicly the same as the ilo. An ilo site will cover many Liteon units for most all modifications The 5045 is mostly straight forward. The DVD , HDD drives can be replaced very easily.

Goto these Sites !!! Read the first carefully as it speaks and cautions on Liteon units.
Take note that the firmware file must be on a NEW CD-R disk with nothing else but the firmware file on it --- [a properly erased CD-RW can be used but to be sure use a new CD-R] also make sure when installing firmware, the process is not interrupted
The other two have much Info on the 5045

Hey there, thanks so much for your help, your info is very very interesting!! The problem is that i am not very technically minded and all the info on your links seem too much to take in!! In answer to your question, perhaps im mistaken about making the 5045 all region, i seem to remember not actually putting a cd in and rewriting the software, just putting a sequence of numbers/pressing remote buttons? Does this sound familiar? So i guess what im asking is please can you recommend a sure-fire way of enabling my 5045 to record vhs copy protected videos? Thankyou again for your help and please forgive my lack of knowledge on this subject!!-Craig

Understand on the technical issue. The last two sites given cover it considerably and can be set aside and looked at later [if desired]
The number sequence described is familiar. The unit may be region hacked but not MV

The first site given is the one to read and look at carefully. While it is Ilo it is the same as the Liteon.

The only ?sure-fire way of enabling my 5045? is to hack it

The proper files for your unit are at this site
Basically follow the instructions at this site.
Ilo and Liteon are the Same

Hi again,
Ok iv had a decent look at the links you gave me but i have 2 queries:
1, is my liteon 5045 the same as either the dvdrhd04 or the dvdro4?
2, do i have to upgrade my firmware before i can then use hack firmware?
It's not at all straightforward is it? :0(
Thankyou so much for putting up with me!!-Craig

1--- I have both. The 5045 and the RHD04 are basicly the same
The RHD04 has a 80 gb HDD and uses only + disks The remotes are
the same
2--- No,
Use the 197b hacked firmware, [as the site says do not go over
that as it will not hack properly
Its straight foward, Just make sure the firmware file is the
only one on a New CD-R disk and is finalized and nothing
interupts the process.[once placed in the recorder and started]
it takes about 1 1/2 min
