I'm a bit disapointed as I wrongly assumed this would be built into the PS3 this time round within sonys own os. So what I want to know is this possible from linux. I'm downloading yellow dog as we speak. I want to keep all my music and video and pictures on my windows home Xp PC machine and play them on my PS3 over ethernet.

Also all the tv shows and films I've downloaded to date appear to be mostly AVI files encoded with either DivX or XviD. Am I going to have to convert all thease files to play on the PS3 or will a media player and all the codecs be available for the linux os. Sorry I've no experiance with linux as yet.

Also the custom partion option on the ps3 alows either 10 gb to the game os or the other os. Which one will i need more space on as I dont know yet. I would like to alocate 30gb to each one. Is there a way to repartition in linux.

Your need to convert the movies, unless you use a linux player.
as the PS3 movice player has very limited support. it won't even play home movies made with windows movie maker, how stupid is that.
