busted PS2 -- $45 for a new one?!?!

I have had a busted PS2 for a long time. I would just break down and get a new one, but all they sell now are the dang slimline ones. I want to be able to play my games off of a hard drive. It is just easier this way, and the games run much more quickly and smoothly.

Anyways, as I was reading a bit about the PS2 on wikipedia, I noticed that you can return a busted PS2 to Sony and get a refurbished unit from them for $45. Is this true, and if so, does anyone on these boards have experience with this process?

Im sure you can buy a fat version of ps2 offline or at gamestop or something. I mean eventually im gonna sell mine but i ant at least $100 for it because its in good condition. You could probably find a beat up one for like $45. google it. good luck
