Played with this title (TotS) for about 5 hours. The DVD is a bit abused..but not really too bad...plays in every stand alone I own and the HP Writer. This was my first attempt of trying to rip, shrink and burn a DVD using all my new toys. I knew this was a big volume title..so I started DVD Decrypter.
Decrypter defaults to identify the movie's main files (needed to rip and use on a back up DVD)...so That's what i tried to rip. got to 93% of the vts_08_3.VOB and stopped...it retried somethng like 24 times before it quit. Tried it again from the beginning..same result...washed and wipped DVD to ensure nothing on the surface....same thing happens at the same spot. Okay...so I figure..I'll try DVD Shrink...load the program and it does the priliminary analyzing..but freezes at 87% of the process (it froze after it analyzed all of the movie portion on the DVD...seemed to not like something in the extra features ). Tried it many more times with the same result. I checked the Movie DVD file layout and everything appears to be in order with the exception of a ton of files in there. I kept trying different approaches to this problem but came up with no solution.
Sooooooooo, I decide since I have the trial version of DVDXCopyExpress downloaded..and not yet used...I'd try it and see if it has a problem backing my troublesome DVD up. I've always liked to tinker with stuff...so I've been devoting most of my time learning all I can about DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink (beta3.5) and Burning with Nero 6. However, with zero success in crackng this problem..I'll resort the DVDXpress and see what happens. (Figuring that if it locks up during the read with this program..then the DVD has some serious problems)
I install the program..load the DVD and set the path..press start...entire disk is copied to my HD...insert blank DVD and press start....DVD is copied to the blank successfully...DVD backup plays in every machine I own..and the quality isn't bad at all...infact it looks pretty darn good.
I did notice that the DVDXCopyXpress left a lot of unused disk space on this backup. I think that if that extra space could have been used, less compression would be needed resulting in a better looking movie or perhaps the addition of a menu. Which is the main reason I like to tinker (squeeze the last bit of performance out of it)
The odd thing I noticed when looking at the files of the backup DVD is..that there are more files present than there would have been had I used the files that DVD Decrypter selected.
Decrypter only selected one VTS_08_0.IFO and then the 5 large .VOB files (6 total)
DVDXCopyXpress copied Video_ts.BUP, Video_TS.IFO, Video_ts.VOB..also another Vts_01_0.BUP.....then the four large .VOB movie files (9 total)
How come the difference of files?
Last part of story---
On my last attempt to use DVD Decrypter on the Original movie DVD..I was able to copy all the files off the Original DVD (and there were a bunch of them)...took a looonnng time to copy them my HD with no halts or stops. I then did a compare of the original DVD files with the copied files on the HD..the files were all there..but the amount of bytes on original DVD were larger that what I had copied to my HD. Damn the torpedoes...I'll charge ahead and see what happens regardless.
.....I proceed to try using DVD Shrink on the files on the HD.....I could not get shrink to read any part of the actual movie...it could analyze the other features like previews etc. but gave an error when trying to read the movie...."DVD Shrink is unable to read that file" or something like that...my mind was mush by then. Cleared the HD Directory and felt fortunate that I was able to get a back up using DVDXCopyExpress.
I took up this "hobby" to give me something productive and fun to do in the evening....now I'm not getting nearly enough sleep :-)
Cheers

I'm glad to see that there are some people so devoted to their DVD Burners and Burning utilities. I remember when I first got my stuff, I was frustrated very easily. Now everything's a breeze. I just want to say keep with it, and you'll get the hang of things. Good luck!!!

Had no problem with Tears of the Sun. Used DVD Decrypter, DVD2One, then RecordNow Max. Worked perfectly the very first time, movie looks and sounds perfect.

When you go to rip a dvd with decrypter it defaults to movie files only.
You need to select all then rip it all to a VIDEO_TS folder.
Then shrink it to another VIDEO_TS folder inside a main folder When its shrunk Add a AUDIO_TS Folder then burn back to dvd.
I use instant VOB for burning the VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS back to DVD-R

As I mentioned in my original post...I finally had to resort to using DVDXCopy Express to back up this movie. I think there was some problems with the original (pretty scratched)..that DVD Shrink couldn't read all the files nor could DVD Decrypter. DVDXCopy Express must use some sort of error correction when it reads.
I've had no problems backing up DVD's using DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter as long as the original DVD is in decent shape.
I think it may pay to have DVDXCopy Express on hand just in case you have a damaged DVD to back up.
Cheers all!

Yep, if you want that damm ugly 321 studios warnning screen. If not, use AnyDVD and CloneDVD. I backed up Tears Of The Sun perfectly with these two!
