Can I play PS1 backups from my HDD?

I've got an old style PS2, hard drive, HDL 0.8B, PS2 games run fine with HDL but I'm wondering if there is any way to play PS1 games from the HDD.
I know HDL is only for PS2 games, but perhaps there is another ELF file or something like that that will let me play PS1 games.
Anyone got any info?

No because there is something with the boot file that won't let the PS1 boot. The file header on the PS1 game is PS-X EXE while the PS2's is ELF. Sorry I couldn't be more in depth.
