Can you Play Split Screen with friend on xbox live?

Hey guys if you have a buddy over and are playing split screen - can you still play on live? Is it possible - would you need two subscriptions to live? I would like to try this with Ranibow 6.

You can with alot of the games. I know Call of Duty 3 you can play 4 people on your Live account. The other 3 sign in as guests. Not sure how many can play on R6, though.
