I rarred an 8GB file once to rematch it to a torrent I was seeding. It took AGES. I'd pay a substantial proportion of the cost of a Quad just to avoid the tedium of waiting hours for that.

It's still just disk thrashing though, but there's nothing a Quad can do that's way over and above anything else where rar/unrar is concerned..

lol ok

1.5Ghz Core 2 Duo
2GB of RAM
250GB HDD
15.4 inch screen, and it's a nice one too
Memory card readers, etc.

It cant play games, but it's decent with everything else. Especially since I took Vista off. Vista is good on newer systems, but Xp FTW on the older ones.

I'd consider that a decently fast laptop. You should have no problems with it apart from games. And, in all honesty, it's not meant for games to begin with :P I bet that thing flies with XP.

No, admittedly, winRAR is the least of my concerns. But it'll be darn cool to see my quad unRAR a 12GB file in half the time :D

Either way, I think my E6750 is going to keep doing most of my torrent/unRAR related things. It's still fast enough for any games out there and is MORE than up to the task of handling a few RAR files and some folding@home. Though, I think the quad will see some folding as well XP

When Praetor first started this thread back in July of 2004 he sent me a PM and prodded me into joining this thread (I didn't need a lot of prodding) although at the time I was working a One click Transcoder thread. Over time we began to get just a bit off topic although we were still discussing PC hardware, and then we would remind each other to keep the value of thread intact. The point was to create an archive of knowledge that would weather and even prove a resource over time. Most of the current discussions now however have little to do with piecing parts together to build a high powered budget rig. I suppose that having it remain active for the purpose of a general chatroom has its merits, but discussions of WinRAR and torrent downloads just seem out of place.

RARs are easier to fix if they are corrupted than the original file in many cases actually. If you store digital media, store it as RAR if you can.

Reasonable build, but I'd swap the GTX260 for an HD4870 any time. The 4870, apart from being faster than the GTX260 is free from pretty much all of ATI's past driver woes, I'm willing to bet that it's a more stable card as well.

Thats true, I wasn't using my head.
I would get the 260 over the 4850 though, but for the price of the 260, I should get the 4870 as it is a better card. Will update.

I also only got the 750W corsair, because it was cheaper than the 620HX corsair....it is not modular however.

Oh, likewise. The GTX260 is better than the HD4850, but it's 50% more expensive, if not more. The HD4870 is similarly priced to the 260 and outpaces it.

Your decision to use the TX750 over the HX series is actually a clever one, as with that mobo you have the option to use Crossfire in the future with two 4870s...

Well I finally got my parts today. Took UPS forever to get it here.

Everything seems to be working fine. The 4870 is sweet but I have yet to try any games. The X38 is also sweet. It's the nicest motherboard I have ever owned by far. The OC options are extensive. Better voltage control than the P35 and better chipset cooling as well.

The Q9450 is still at stock right now. I'm still running Orthos Prime on it before I OC. I tried the line method as shown on the Arctic Silver website. Using both Real Temp and Speedfan, these are my temps under Orthos:

Core0 - 58*C
Core1 - 58*C
Core2 - 59*C
Core3 - 57*C

Overall Temp: 58*C

It idles somewhat warm at 36*C under a Tuniq Tower. It's quiet enough with the fan at 100%.

I'm told that Quads are supposed to run hotter. Is this true? I also heard the Q9450 in particular had issues with a bad thermistor. Some people are getting idles of like 45*C with decent coolers.

Further Googling shows people with similar temps with a Tuniq Tower. So I'm trusting that mine are fine.

Well yeah, a Quad core has TWICE the cores, so it's going to be hotter.

I think the 45nm CPUs have problems with stuck sensors.

IIRC it's only the core temperature sensors that get stuck, so go by the 'global' CPU temps.
