I am trying to copy a Maxell 16X DVD-R I recorded on my DVD recorder. The drive seems to be able to read the disc. However, it is unable to recognize a blank disc. The kid at Office Depot said I should try a different brand of blank DVD. However, I think that I need to update the firmware. I have been unable to find a TSST website where I can download an update.---Clearly, this is not a life-or-death situation. However, if anyone has experience with this situation. I would appreciate sugesstions/advice.
Thanks

Maybe both. Maxell are not the best quality media to burn to if you are wanting good video quality and durability. Stick with Taiyo Yudens or Verbatims, as a safe bet.

For firmware updates, try here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_search.php

If those Maxells are made in Japan they are good media. Definitely check your firmware for those new X16 discs. FFsp42 gave you the site.

I found the firmware update I need at that site. However, when I click the downlod link a warning comes up that it is designed for "advanced users", and it is possible to damage the drive. Although I feel faily confident with my general computer skills, I have no experience working with the CD/DVDW drive. What is the deal with this warning?

It's a warning to make sure you are flashing your CD/DVD drive with the correct firmware update. Flashing with wrong firmware (for a different model/brand) could damage your CD/DVD drive. If you entered your information correctly and have not flashed with that update before, you should be OK.

Just follow the directions to a tee and pray the power doesn't go off during the flash. I was scared to death when I flashed my first drive.
