I recently purchased an external Iomega USB 2.0 CD-RW 52x24x52 and it is not performing well. I am using the included HotBurn Pro software, version 2.3.3.
I am using Memorex 48x CD-Rs, but if I try to copy faster than 12x, I get an unusable CD.
My USB hub is 2.0, but it is integrated into the motherboard with six ports and I was wondering if adding another PCI USB 2.0 controller card for the Iomega would help.
Any other suggestions as to what I could do to improve the performance?
My machine is a Pentium IV at 1.8GHz, 256MB RAM, and I write to an image file on the hard drive before burning.
Any type of help will be greatly appreciated.

Try the discs on a different burner to rule out the possibility that its the discs that are messing you up. You mention that anything faster than 12x results in a messed CD.... do you have DMA enabled?

Quote: HotBurn Pro software, version 2.3.3.
Junk cd burning software and a memory hog as well m8. Be sure that you've installed USB 2.0 drivers and working properly. As Praetor mentioned, enable DMA and switch to a free burning software called burnatonce.

Thanks for the help.
I got to looking and it seems I have a conflict between the DMA controller and PCI bus, and also between the USB controller and several installed cards.
I am trying to work out something with my computer manufacturer, but it will probably be awhile.
I will try the BurnAtOnce program to see if it makes a difference.

How do you know m8? Are there "conflicts" with your USB controllers& installed cards? Right click My Computer>properties>Hardware tab folder>Device Manager. Do you see anything highlighted in "yellow"? If so post and maybe I can help. Be sure to click the + beside each device...
