Do I need to set it to slave for the computer to read it and how do you do that

not sure, but since you already have a main drive in there i would say either slave or cable select is what you would set it as.
And either the book for the hard drive or it may even be written on that back. It should tell you which position to put the jumper in to set those, like this (each hard drive is different so you will have to look up your exact model number)

on the back where the ide cables are at there should be a jumper.take out the jumper which should be in the master over to salve or cs.when using winhiip it should read your ps2 fine.
