I have a 7 year old grandson, who does not take care of his ps2 games at home. I have spent $100's of dollars on games. I would like to start making backups for him to play and keep the originals for when the backups won't work any longer. I just bought him a new console which I believe is version 15a. Can someone assist me with deciding which chip I need? I don't think the swap magic will work as he just turned 7. Thanks in advance for your help.

no, swap magic will do nothing for you, as he will most likely just scratch up that disc as well.
Crystal Chip V2.0 or Matrix Infinity Green Dot is what you should look at. Teammodders.com can do the install if you are in the USA and also have the chips.

Personally i would have asked before getting the new console, my answer then would have been to buy a premodded V7 at the above sight (slightly used) and then you could install a hard drive (about $80 more) and put the games on it. Then no discs would ever get damaged again.

For DVD's i suggest Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden to make your back ups with as they are the top two brands. Cheap DVD's will not only wear out the laser faster, but may not work 50% of the time

With your version 15a, you can search some reliable modders with a good modchip to install for you. But, I think you better off buying a pre-modded ps console (google) and sell your version 15a on ebay. You probably make a better deal that way.
