I have had trouble with several movies now that I shouldn't have any trouble with. I successfuly can analyze and encode my movies but when it comes to the burning part it will say checking disc then "Phase:write in" and my burner freezes and it won't respond until I unplug it and plug it back in then shrink says that it couldn't burn the movie and has been doing this for some time now. I have Nero and have had no real trouble burning until just yesterday when this started. I just can't get it to write anything to a disc, it just keeps freezing on me. HELP!!!!
P.S. I have tried restarting, reinstalling shrink and redoing the whole disc again and nothing yet.

hello,
i assume you are autoburning with Nero, right?
If you post a burn log that would help us help you
You can find it here program files/nero/nero/core
look for the nerohistory.txt file
dont forget to edit your serial number out.

Just to clarify....
DVD Shrink cannot burn disks all by itself. There is no burning engine in the program. It can recognize three programs and start them to do the burn.
They are:
CopytoDVD
DVD Decrypter
Nero
Since Shrink can't burn, then there's a problem with whichever burn program that you are using.

I found a nerohistory.log file. I am using Nero and I have had this problem a long time ago but it hadn't done it in a long time until now. Here is what the last log says:

i don't dissect Nero logs anymore, i've done literally 1000's of them, they drive me mad :)
but i'll make an exception (just don't tell any of the regulars LOL)..
Quote: Nero API version: 6.6.0.16
- that version is absolutely fine and stable/bug free
Quote: Recorder: <HP DVD Writer 840e> Version: 68JH
- burners' firmware's up to date according to this - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softw...&dlc=en&lang=en
Quote: Physical memory : 445MB (456176kB)
Free physical memory: 107MB (109664kB)
Memory in use : 75
- that's not good, virtually no free memory so the hard drive will be 'swapping' ie thrashing the hard disk using the hasd disk as virtual memory (not good, especially during a burn)
Quote: DRM: StartDrmRecording(RealRec:1, ImageRec:0, Copies:1)
DRM: Beginning burn process.
- this is the one bit i've never figured out about Nero - i don't know if these DRM messages in a Nero log mean you're trying to back up a movie that's still 'protected', or not..
edit- i re-read your first post, you reckon you're dealing with the movie encryption fine, so it should be safe to ignore this section..
Quote: Recorder: HP DVD Writer 840e, Media type: DVD-R
Disc Manufacturer: MCC 02 - RG20
Disc Application Code: 64, Disc Physical Code: 193
- firmware quite happily understands/recognises those (very nice) disks
Quote: Writer-Buffer for HP DVD Writer 840e\H2 T0 reduced to 32768Bytes
- hmmm, see my comment about lack of free memory
Quote: Burn process failed at 8x (11,080 KB/s) - try 4x

that's Roxio, which 'can' interfere with Nero, if you have the packet writing portion of Roxio installed.

dont multitask during burning,(running other programs)
get some more ram, another stick of 512mb would help a lot, the more the better.

To make a long story short, the drive wasn't reading the data in the BCA. Then you started getting scsi (drives) aborted errors. I'd suspect something to do with software interfering with the drive(s). A quick way to see and clear things up is to delete all the backup software and then install in steps to see where the problems come in. I'm suspecting packet ware or driver conflicts with Nero and Roxio. Delete both and clean up after Nero with the Nero cleaner tool and RoxiZap for Roxio cleanup. Delete Shrink, even if you have before. Delete the rest of your backup programs if it isn't too difficult. Be sure to delete any packet (batch) writing programs. Clean up, run a reg cleaner and reboot. Install your decryption software, DVD Shrink, and Nero (Do Not Install InCD). I'd reboot to allow Windows a good "handshake" with the programs. Now try a backup and save the log. Use the same media, that's good stuff with MCC. Burn at a reasonable speed (4-8X). If it works good you're in business. If not, post the new Nero burn log.

Were do I find the Nero clean up tool? I looked under program files and in Nero itself. I haven't deleted it yet but I was just wondering where to find this application. So far I have reinstalled everything but Nero.
Thanks for everyone's help!!

Once you get everything cleaned up and the Nero installed, do a backup and let us know what happens. If the burn fails, include the log. If the burn fails, while you're waiting, install ImgBurn. Use Shrink to transcode your movie to the hard drive. Under target select Create DVD Files: Hard Disk Folder. Use your player software to make sure the files play good and then try burning with ImgBurn. Put a DVD recordable in the drive and don't forget to set the speed. Use Build mode, under Device select your burner, then browse for the folder, select and click the files to DVD (burn) icon and you're there. That tells if it's just one burner program or more than just Nero. Hopefully you won't need to do the extra work, but just in case ...

Ok, I reinstalled Nero now too and used the demo version I'd gotten a link from several people here. It still didn't work but I can't find the Nero history file in this Nero. I looked under program files and the Nero file but I couldn't find it. But it still didnt work this time!

If you are using Nero 7 then look in the core folder, thats where it will be, not really sure if it doesn't make if your using a demo, though.
did you use that roxio zap tool to remove that driver?
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml
here is a tool to get rid of it, like creaky said it may be causing the problem with nero

no need to use the roxio zap tool since that driver is not in the log,
it looks like you are getting the same error
have you tried a different burning program to see if Nero is the problem?
try imgBurn(free)

I was surprised when I came on this evening and there wasn't already a comment as to whether ImgBurn worked or not.

I tried selecting the ImgBurn with DVD Decrypter from the DVD Shrink but it didn't work either. I downloaded the ImgBurn program too but I don't know how to use it. I'm getting DVDFab Platnum soon and I'm hoping that that will do it for me.

robpardee,
Change the exe file in shrink with the one that supports ImgBurn and you can set Shrink to use ImgBurn automatically.

I advised recording a file folder to the HD because they're more easily accessible for analysis and ediing. You could do ISO and open with a virtual drive. But burning files is no big deal with ImgBurn. The simple outline I provided is enough for those familiar with similar software.

The capture shows all the details for burning files with ImgBurn as I pointed out in my previoius post.
You'll need some of the software to make necessary changes. It's all freeware. Go over the installation instructions and use as much of the software as you need. Click Here for the download.

I just obtained DVDFab Platinum and installed it. I have used it before and it has worked in the past but along with the shrink problems I have been having since this didn't work either it seems like the problem is not with shrink or Nero. I say this because I tried to burn and yet again just like everything else I've tried it freezes at the part where it starts to burn the disc it freezes and then says the burn process failed! Since DVDFab has it's own burning program this suggests that my problem before with Nero isn't nero's fault. I have no idea what the problem is but it's frustrating. Does anyone think that uninstalling and reinstalling my DVD drive would help at all? Any other suggestions.

Do you think you want to consider the alternatives I offered? If so click
Here for a different method of cleaning up your source files before opening them in the transcoding software. Follow the guide. Them follow my suggestion above.

Oh yes I saw that link but I'm not familiar with the program or how to do it so I was a little leary to try it.. I actually am still rather new with the whole burning thing and learning all the things I can about it. I will go ahead and download the program and try it out if you have any other recommendations in the mean time let me know. P.S. how do I make ImgBurn the default image burner on Shrink?

By doing as I suggested and following the included instructions. If you have any problems just ask. The archive is in a rar format, so you'll need WinRAR or a similar program to open it. If you don't have an archive tool, you can download WinRAR from http://www.download.com (C/Net).
