Hi all, after being a silent browser on this site for a while i thought i would take time to sign up & be involved.

First off all i would just like to say what a great site this is & what a brilliant, helpful & friendly community there seems to be, hopefully someone can help me with my problem as i've seen throughout the forums.

Anyway enough going on from me to cut a long story short i have a few problems with burning games & any advice/tips would be grateful. I have searched through the site to get as much info as i can but im still having probs & wouldnt mind some help from the horses mouth so to speak.

I recently purchased Swap Magic 3.6 PAL along with the Flip Top Lid to go with my Playstation 2 (fat version, 8 screws).

Anyway i installed the lid & purchased a backup copy of GTA Vice City Stories from someone i know as it saved me time & money so i swaped it with the Swap Magic disc & it worked fine. From what i can see the game was burned on the following media:

Its was a blue coloured disc with the following on the front:
"Valuepack by Traxdata" DVD-R x8 4.7gb/120mins

So after it worked i decided to purchase some blank DVDs & got myself some of these:

So to test my new media i done the following:

Name of Game Scareface
Game Region PAL
Media Make Verbatim
Media ID ?
Disc Max Speed x16
Speed of Burning x4
PS2 Modification Swap Magic 3.6
PS2 Version Fat Version 8 Screws
Game acquired Back Up Disc (.iso acquired from an original)
Rebuilded No
Rebuilding Software No
Burning Software DVDDecrypter

So as you can see from the above i made an exact copy from an original disc & the games runs fine however i do need to use Zonloader aswell.

I have also burned the below with no problems (but i will mention it did not work when i burnt it with DVDDecrypter when burnt at x4, loading screens crashed):

Name of Game Metal Slug Anthology
Game Region PAL (I think)
Media Make Verbatim
Media ID ?
Disc Max Speed x16
Speed of Burning x4
PS2 Modification Swap Magic 3.6
PS2 Version Fat Version 8 Screws
Game acquired Downloaded .iso from the web
Rebuilded No
Rebuilding Software No
Burning Software Alchol 120%

Now basically im having problems with the games i burn Stuttering/Loading/Skipping basically burning games which are not playable. Yes i have made about 15 coasters which is not good as i dont drink that many cups of tea at a time.

Below are some of the games ive tried burning & are giving me this problem:

Name of Game Smackdown VS Raw 2007
Game Region PAL (i think)
Media Make Verbatim
Media ID ?
Disc Max Speed x16
Speed of Burning (x2 Alchol) (x4 Alchol) (x8 Alchol)(x16 Alchol)(x4 DVDDycrypter) (x16 DVDDycrypter)
PS2 Modification Swap Magic 3.6
PS2 Version Fat Version 8 Screws
Game acquired Downloaded .ISO from the web
Rebuilded No
Rebuilding Software No
Burning Software DVDDecrypter & Alchol as above

Name of Game Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter
Game Region PAL (i think)
Media Make Verbatim
Media ID ?
Disc Max Speed x16
Speed of Burning x4
PS2 Modification Swap Magic 3.6
PS2 Version Fat Version 8 Screws
Game acquired Downloaded .ISO from the web
Rebuilded No
Rebuilding Software No
Burning Software DVDDecrypter

Name of Game Medal Of Honour Vanguard
Game Region PAL
Media Make Verbatim
Media ID ?
Disc Max Speed x16
Speed of Burning (x4 DVDDycrpter) (x2 Alchol)
PS2 Modification Swap Magic 3.6
PS2 Version Fat Version 8 Screws
Game acquired Downloaded .ISO from the web
Rebuilded No
Rebuilding Software No
Burning Software DVDDecrypter & Alchol as above

So with the above i was getting problems with the game Stuttering/Loading/Skipping so it made me think why is this?

I thought maybe i was getting bad burns because i was downloading files from the web & they may have been ripped with different software & needed burning with the same or specific software.

So i had a think & thought as i got Scarface to work from an original copy which i burnt myself i thought i would give it a go again just to be sure, so i did the below:

(Ripped .ISO from original game disc with DVDDycrypter)
Name of Game Need For Speed Carbon Collectors Edition
Game Region PAL
Media Make Verbatim
Media ID ?
Disc Max Speed x16
Speed of Burning x4
PS2 Modification Swap Magic 3.6
PS2 Version Fat Version 8 Screws
Game acquired Back Up Disc (.iso acquired from an original)
Rebuilded No
Rebuilding Software No
Burning Software DVDDecrypter

So i put it in the PS2 hoping it would be fine & no i was getting the same Stuttering/Loading/Skipping again.

So now what? I thought it may be my media being crap but i heard Verbatim were recommeded however i ended up with x16 not x8 could this be the problem? If this may be how come i managed to burn Scarface & Metal Slug Anthology ok?

Sorry for the lengthy post i've probably bored you all to death already & theres most likely a simple soloution so if anyone can help & give me some advice that will be great.

Many thanks
Adam

My vote is on your DVD burner. I use 16x verbatim, I burn at 8x, and I have well over 100 copies all using DVDdecrypter. The only time I ever made coasters was when my burner was sh**ing the bed. It came on all of a sudden to. One day was burning fine next coasters.

Sorry for double post

Very well could be bad downloads also. You really should own the games your backing up though. It's the law and using the original is the best source for your image.

Thanks for your help, i do own the original games so all is cool it was just i have a fast connection at work so its takes me no time to download & it gives me something to do while im on a lunch break.

So if you think its my burner how come i managed to burn 2 games fine? Also I've backed up many dreamcast games in the past however they where on CD-R's.

How do i find out what burner i have so you lot can tell if its crap or not? See it come with the computer & i have no clue.

Thanks again.

i would first look on the internet to see if your burner has any firmware updates. If it does then update as it will help with media compatibility and burning.
Next i would try cleaning the laser (read a guide so you know what your doing, and do not get the laser too wet).

Making about 2 games work is really no indication of success at all. That is just blind luck that those two worked.
The discs you have should be fine, burning at 4X will usually work but i have also seen people who have had great success with burning them at 6X or 8X. That is why i stick with 8X discs.

Plus read the bold thread at the top of this section that deals with this specific problem. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/303681

I second what Steimy said. If you can't figure out what burner you have just remove it from your tower and read the manufacture sticker. That should give all info needed to find a firmware upgrade.

Like Steimy said and I said earlier making copies before does not mean much. My burner went wacky over night. Burned fine one night next night all coasters. If you need a new one they are real cheap now. I found a lite-on 16x DL burner w/ dvd Ram compatibility for like $30. Check w/ newegg.com or zipzoomfly.com I believe I found mine on zipzoom.

Thanks again for all the help.

I've found out what burner i have its

Model: _NEC DVD_RW ND-3530A (D: Bus0,ID 0)
Type: CD/DVD-ROM, CD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD+R DL
Interface: ATAPI (Padus ASPI, N/A)
Version: 2.01

Loads of info about it here too: http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/...ArticleId=13809

So first i will try the firmware update before i try anything else, so can anyone help me in the direction to a trusted site to download an update from?

that is usually a good place to start, or the manufacturers website if you want only the manufacturers firmware.
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=23
there is the page with the latest firmware which is 104C

Thanks for the reply Steimy.

Looks like 1.04 is the latest then, i do belive this is the official release from NEC however i would'nt mind actually finding out what this new version has to offer but i cannot find the official NEC page with the update on. You know what these sites are like they always lead to no where is there any chance you can help?

Also is there a way to put it back to how it was just in case it goes wrong?

no, once you upgrade it will not let you flash back to a lower version. at least not that i have ever been able to do.
http://support.necam.com/optical/downloa...readme.asp?ID=8
http://support.necam.com/optical/downloads/flashfirmware/

all just a matter of how your search. I suppose since they do not list the 3530A but list that firmware for the 3540A that it works with both models. I usually trust the firmware page i linked you to, it is where i have always gone.
