Looking for some direction: Parent's computer. 2 Mhz processor, 512 MB memory, Windows XP. It's been a long while since I've looked at the thing but they're complaining that it's slow and "not working right".

Today I checked it out and it's dreadfully slow. Discovered that they're using AOL with AOL's Security Suite as well as running McAfee's stuff. Deleting McAfee's redundant virus, firewall, etc helped somewhat but not much.

Installed Adaware and CC Cleaner and ran both with Windows in safe mode. Deleted the uglies that were found. Restarted and a little better but not much.

Decided to download HiJack This and generate a log for you helpful types. The download window came up, I clicked to save the file to the C drive. The progress bar went from left to right, then the window went away. No "download complete" window came up. I checked the folder where I saved the file and ......nothing - HiJack This wasn't there.

Tried a few more time to download with the same result. For whatever reason I can't seem to get the program downloaded to their computer.

Suggestions as to what to try next would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hehehe. One day, when I was at school (those computers are horrible, by the way), I tried to download HijackThis to bypass the restrictions on the Control Panel because my mouse wasn't sensitive enough. Since you can't open "My Documents" for some odd reason, and since HijackThis takes about half a second to download, I had to laboriously download and re-download it just so I could uncheck "Close this window when the download completes". If you look where it saved to - maybe you saved it incorrectly. Also, it is an archive, and is easy to miss, so make sure you have looked carefully.

I can't do crap without HijackThis, so I'll need that lol.

Edit: Oh, and just as a side note, try not saving it as HijackThis.zip. Many viruses look for and delete files like that. Save it as something like "asert2q4tradf.zip" or "scanner.zip".

I'm going to feel like a real idiot if it saved and I somehow missed it. I'll be at their house tomorrow and I'll take another more thorough look.

Thanks for the info Fredil, I'll post what I find..........

Ok, double checked and triple checked the folder where Hijack This was to be downloaded and it's not there.

So I transfered the Hijack This exe from my thumbdrive to the C drive. Tried to install it and as the first window comes up it immediately closes and the program wont install.

Tried re-naming the file as well with the same result.

Is it possible that whatever bug is on the computer would keep the program from loading?

Could anyone kindly look this over and provide feedback? I brought their comp to my house so it would be easier to work on - any help is appreciated!

Malware will not always show in safe mode. Try downloading & updating avg antispyware. Once updated, boot to safe mode, Run a full system scan and let it remove any crap it finds. Boot back through to normal mode and see if HijackThis runs then. Also you are running a beta of HijackThis, the last stable version is 1.99.1, I would advise that you download and run the stable version.

Starting to think I'm nuts now..............

attempting to download AVG Anti-Spyware.

I connect to the net, but as soon as I try to get to the AVG page the window closes. Can go to other web sites w/o problem.

What the heck am I doing wrong?

Trend Micro HijackThis? That needs to be installed, and that's not good. This older version of HijackThis (not much older, and offers essentially the same features) doesn't require installing, it's just a .zip file, so you should be able to download and extract it with no problem. Again, rename it to something like aserf3q5yetdf.zip.

As for AVG, well, it's easy to use, but it's not incredibly good for an antivirus. Try Avira AntiVir. And I seriously doubt that it's you. Many new viruses, and some old and new trojans, attempt to close CCleaner, HijackThis, Ad-Aware, Spybot, and others when they see it.

I'm just going to test a bit here, since I only have a small idea of what's wrong with that comp. Go here and follow the directions. If it's clean, you don't have Vundo. One thing ruled out... lol

Finally, if you can get HijackThis in normal mode, post a log. If not, disable System Restore and run HijackThis in Safe Mode. Place checks beside the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com/search/de_srchlft.html
O9 - Extra button: Poker.com - {6FDD5236-C9F0-49ef-935D-385F5E21991A} - C:\Program Files\Poker.com\poker.exe
(this is a security risk)
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} -
O16 - DPF: {9522B3FB-7A2B-4646-8AF6-36E7F593073C} (cpbrkpie Control) - http://a19.g.akamai.net/7/19/7125/1452/f...02/cpbrkpie.cab

Also, if anyone knows what the hell a Fuzzy Algorithmcheck is, DO NOT HESITATE TO TELL ME!!! :)

Good luck.

Edit: Oh, right, and of course, re-enable System Restore when finished.

I'm convinced the machine is against me :-)

Certainly strange how I'm able to open and run some things and not others. CCleaner works, but Adaware no longer functions (screen pops up then in a split second goes away), HjT does the same, even using the renamed zip file, Spybot SD reacts the same when I try to open it.

So, no HjT in normal mode.

I'll try it in safe mode and select the items that you indicated and see where I stand.

Really tempted at this point to simply do a control/F11 at bootup for Dell's hard drive restore.

Thanks for your continued input and help!

Many, if not most viruses, attach themselves to restore points, so while a restore might get rid of some crap, it likely will leave some remaining.

Excellent, we're making some progress. I never realized what a blessing HijackThis in normal mode is :)

Do you have ads for WinFixer? If so, then you have Vundo, and should probably run VundoFix again.

Uncovered a few new craps:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com/search/de_srchlft.html
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll

I don't know if I've caught all of it, so keep trying to run some virus scanners, and try to install a free firewall (Comodo is the best, in my opinion).

No problem; it's what I do! I like helping people, and it's fun, too. You also learn things, which isn't bad either :)

Fredil, Thanks again for your responses and help. I ran the vundo fix and deleted the selections you suggested and there is a huge difference in the way the computer runs. When I started, the CPU was working at close to 100% just sitting idle on the desktop. Currently, at the desktop, the cpu resource meter shows 2-4%. The speed is back up to normal and running much smoother.

Now if I can just get them away from AOL..............

When I'm through with my double shifts I'll run a final HjT log and see how it looks. Thank you!

Thought I had forgotten right, Fredil? :-)

Haven't forgotten, just shirking my duties as a good son because work has been so damn busy.

Going to attempt to get over to the parents place in the next few days and run you off another log.

THANK YOU for following up.........!!

Apart from that, there's also a bit of junk. Reboot Windows into Safe Mode (search this on Google if you do not know how) and press F3 at the Desktop. The Search Companion should come up; find and delete this folder:

C:\Program Files\MyWaySA

You *may* have to disable Hidden Files, but hopefully not. If you do, go to Control Panel > Folder Options > View.

Reboot into normal, install a firewall, and post a fresh HijackThis log :)
