Devhook 0.51 loading isos questions

i was reading a guide and it said to load isos with devhook 0.51 you emulated 3.1 then selected the iso, however, you had to have anyumd in the drive... what is that, i thought 0.51 emulated firmware 1.5 and that 1.5 could run homebrew and isos. do i need a boot disk?

the umd is to trick the psp into thinking the ISO u are loading is the umd instead
