Problem copying from DVD+RW disks on Sony DDU1612

I have a Philips DVDR 890 real-time video DVD recorder. I've recorded DVD+RWs on the unit and are trying unsuccesfully to copy them. My copying setup is a fast pentium computer with a Sony DVD-ROM DDU1612 drive (clearly specd by Sony to be compatable with DVD+R/W as well as -R/W), and a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-104 drive.

Note that I can play the DVD+RW disk without problem on either DVD drive in the computer (I'm using CyberLink Power DVD as a player).

My intention is to rip off the Sony ROM drive, then subsequently record on the other drive. The problem is that after several minutes of ripping time I get an error and can't proceed further. Attempts to rip from the Pioneer drive give similar results.

The error occurs whether I'm copying using the 'build global image' function in Veritas RecordNow DX, or using Nero Express, or even attempting to copy contents of VIDEO_TS folder using windows explorer.

The error reports error px engine error (command:28 Sense: 03 ASC:11 ASCQ:06) in Veratis, CIRC UNRECOVERED ERROR (031106), in Nero, or Cannot copy VTS_01_1: Data error (cyclic redundancy check) when attempting to copy in windows explorer. Prior to the error the DVD ROM drive can be heard making what I imagine to be a seeking sound, some component seems to speed up and slow down repeatably for 30seconds or so, then error comes up.

Note that I can succesfully rip from DVD-R, or DVD-ROM disks on the same system.

Any advice?
